Study: John 14–17
Dominion Through Union: The Life of Sons.
We must shift from “waiting on God” to believing, obeying, enforcing Christ’s victory, living as the new creation, exercising dominion, and manifesting sonship. We must behave as citizens of Heaven.
John 14–17 is Jesus’ final training session before the Cross.
These chapters are not primarily about comfort. They are about commission.
Jesus was preparing ordinary men to become the continuation of His ministry in the earth as sons and daughters.
He was establishing a new race of people—the New Creation—filled with His Spirit, carrying His authority, and commissioned to enforce the victory He would purchase through His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension.
This is the believer’s mandate:
Revelation → Identity → Dominion → Action
John 14 – Christ In You:
The Continuation of His Ministry
Main Theme:
Jesus reveals that believers will become His living representatives in the earth.
Key Verses:
John 14:12 “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also…”
Revelation:
Jesus never suggested believers would merely admire His ministry.
He commanded them to continue it.
This is not a promise for a select few.
This is the normal Christian life.
The question is not whether God wants to heal.
The question is whether believers will act on His Word.
The same Christ who walked through Galilee now lives in His people.
His ministry did not end.
It multiplied.
John 14:16-18 “I will not leave you comfortless…”
Revelation:
Jesus did not leave us as spiritual orphans trying to survive until Heaven.
The Holy Spirit came to make us effective ambassadors of the Kingdom.
We have not been abandoned.
We have been empowered.
“I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” John 14:20
Revelation:
This is the foundation of dominion.
The believer is not separated from Christ.
The believer is joined to Christ.
Everything we do flows from this union.
We are not trying to get God to come.
He already came.
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you…”
Revelation:
Kingdom peace is confidence in Christ’s finished work.
It is the certainty that no circumstance is greater than the One living within you.
Activation:
Personal
• Read John 14:12 daily until it becomes your expectation.
• Stop viewing yourself as a believer trying to become effective.
• See yourself as Christ’s representative now.
Ministry
• Pray for the sick.
• Cast out devils.
• Minister healing expecting results because Jesus commanded it.
Declaration:
“Christ lives in me. I am His representative. I carry His authority, His Spirit, and His ministry into every situation.”
John 15 – Abiding: The Life of the new creation man
Main Theme:
The New Man lives from union, not effort.
Key Verses:
John 15:4-5 “Abide in me…”
Revelation:
Abiding is not passive.
Abiding means remaining fully convinced of your union with Christ.
The branch does not struggle.
The branch simply remains connected.
The life is already in the Vine.
John 15:7 “If ye abide in me…”
Revelation:
Authority increases when your thinking aligns with God’s thinking.
When His Word becomes your reality, faith becomes natural.
John 15:8 “That ye bear much fruit…”
Revelation:
God expects results.
The Kingdom is measurable.
Lives changed.
Bodies healed.
Captives delivered.
Disciples made.
Fruit glorifies the Father.
John 15:16 “I have chosen you, and ordained you…”
Revelation:
You were not chosen merely to attend church.
You were chosen to represent Heaven.
You have a divine assignment.
You carry a King’s commission.
Activation:
Personal
• Stop striving to become what God already made you.
• Renew your mind to who you are in Christ.
Ministry
• Look for opportunities to release life into others daily.
Declaration:
“I abide in Christ. His life flows through me. I produce Kingdom fruit everywhere I go.”
John 16 – The Holy Spirit: Power for Dominion
Main Theme:
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to enforce Christ’s victory on earth.
Key Verses:
John 16:7 “It is expedient for you that I go away…”
Revelation:
Jesus said the Spirit within would be better than Jesus beside them.
Why?
Because now Christ can operate through every believer simultaneously.
The Church becomes His Body in action. That means, what He did, you now do. Not can do, but must do.
John 16:13 “He will guide you into all truth…”
Revelation:
The Holy Spirit guides us into action, not passivity.
He reveals Heaven’s perspective so we can bring Heaven’s solutions.
John 16:23 “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name…”
Revelation:
The name of Jesus is not a religious phrase.
It is delegated authority.
We operate as authorized representatives of the King.
John 16:33 “I have overcome the world.”
Revelation:
This is the foundation of all Kingdom ministry.
We do not fight for victory.
We minister from victory.
Jesus already won.
We simply enforce His triumph.
Activation:
Personal
• Develop the habit of immediate obedience to the Holy Spirit.
Ministry
• Approach every need from the standpoint of Christ’s finished work.
Declaration:
“The Holy Spirit empowers me. I enforce Christ’s victory. I bring Heaven’s reality into earthly situations.”
John 17 – Sent with Authority
Main Theme:
Jesus commissions believers to carry His authority and mission into the world.
Key Verses:
John 17:18 “As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them…”
Revelation:
Jesus was sent with authority.
Jesus was sent with power.
Jesus was sent to destroy the works of the devil.
Now He sends us the same way.
This is not symbolic.
It is a commission. It’s the mandate.
John 17:20-21 “That they all may be one…”
Revelation:
The Kingdom advances when believers unite around the King’s mission.
John 17:22 “The glory which thou gavest me I have given them…”
Revelation:
Jesus withheld nothing necessary for the assignment.
Everything required has already been provided.
John 17:24 “That they may behold my glory…”
Revelation:
The purpose of all ministry is that people encounter the reality of Christ.
Activation:
Personal
• See yourself as sent by God every day.
• Refuse to separate ministry from daily life.
Ministry
• Intentionally bring the Kingdom into homes, workplaces, streets, businesses, and communities.
Declaration:
“I have been sent by Christ. I carry His authority, His love, His power, and His mission wherever I go.”
Conclusion: Living In Dominion Reality
Jesus did not give us John 14–17 so we could admire it. He gave it so we could live it.
In John 14, Jesus said the works He did, believers would do also. He did not present that as a special calling for a few. He presented it as the normal life of a believer.
In John 15, He showed us the source of that life. We are not trying to produce fruit through effort. We abide in Him and allow His life to flow through us.
In John 16, He revealed that the Holy Spirit would come to live in us, teach us, guide us, and empower us. We are not waiting for power to come from Heaven. The Spirit of God already dwells within the believer.
In John 17, Jesus settled forever the question of our mission. As the Father sent Him, He has sent us. We are not spectators. We are His representatives in the earth.
The message of John 14–17 is simple:
Christ is in us.
We are in Him.
The Holy Spirit lives within us.
We have been sent by the King.
Therefore, we stop waiting and start obeying.
We stop asking if God wants to move and just begin moving with God.
We stop seeing ourselves as powerless servants and begin living as sons and daughters of God. Jesus Himself said that we are no longer servants but now we are sons and daughters.
Every believer is called to reveal Jesus.
Every believer is called to carry His love.
Every believer is called to heal the sick, preach the Gospel, make disciples, and demonstrate the Kingdom of God.
The question is not whether God will do something.
The question is whether we will believe what He said and act on it.
Jesus has already given the command.
The Holy Spirit has already been given.
The authority has already been delegated.
The mission has already been assigned.
